A little over a year ago, our family moved to a small community near Lake Belton. We bought a home that looks over the lake, is a 30-minute drive to everything, and sits two doors down from our friends. Our family loves it out here, but we are set apart from town and amenities, so we have to get creative with our entertainment. We started Vine Club (VC) and have been getting together with our friends to talk about faith, family, struggles, and hopes. We started dreaming about having vineyards and creating a space for our community to grow and support each other. In March, we planted bare root vines in our backyard and now we have 23 vines, some healthier than others, growing on the west bank of the lake. VC happens about once a week. Sometimes we get together to tend vines or learn about a new piece of equipment, like a refractometer. More often than not, it looks like us sharing more than a bottle of wine on the back porch. It’s the good and bad news of the week, it’s giving and receiving encouragement, and it’s also just having fun together.
Maybe it’s the educator in me, or the granola girl from the PNW, or the artist that wants to be Miss Rumphius and add a little beauty to the world, but I like the idea of bringing people together, and I think we could use more of that right now. I like finding things to celebrate and thank God for. I think that’s why I love photography so much. It’s the noticing. We can see more of His creation, appreciate something lovely with our eyes, our ears, our tastebuds, and relate a little more to one another.
